Yasuhiro Shirai will give an afternoon talk on “Second Language Acquisition Research and Second/Foreign Language Teaching”.

Yasuhiro Shirai (Ph.D., UCLA) is Professor and Chair in the Department of Linguistics, University of Pittsburgh. His research interests include first and second language acquisition of tense-aspect morphology, and cognitive models of language acquisition/processing. His publications appeared in Applied Psycholinguistics, First Language, Journal of Child Language, Journal of Pragmatics, Language, Language Learning, Linguistics, Memory & Cognition, Second Language Research, Studies in Language, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, among others. He has (co-)authored and (co-)edited more than ten books/special issues of journals, including Handbook of East Asian Linguistics: Japanese (Cambridge University Press). He was a Japan Foundation Fellow (2001–2002), is an associate editor of First Language, and serves on the editorial boards of Studies in Second Language Acquisition, IRAL, and Journal of Cognitive Science, and as President of the Japanese Society for Language Sciences. Prior to his current appointment, he was an associate professor of linguistics at Cornell University. He has also taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Carnegie Mellon University, and Daito Bunka University.
